This is a great time of year in academia as we celebrate the graduation of our students and the successful progression into the next year for our continuing students. Of course, we are also preparing to welcome our new students into the Marymount family. It is important to reflect on the past academic year and plan for our upcoming year. Part of the reflection involves rejoicing in our many faculty and student accomplishments, assessing areas that need improvement, and planning strategically for the next academic year and beyond. As always, we welcome your thoughts and support.

Over this past year, staff and faculty have collaborated to create a new mission and vision for the College of Health and Education (CHE) that is aligned with the MU mission and vision and will be the foundation for our new CHE strategic plan. In addition, our faculty are in the process of creating innovative and collaborative educational and research initiatives as we continue to support the university and form meaningful partnerships in our local, national and global communities.

Our accomplishments have been many but here are a few highlights:

  • Our college continues to see growth especially in our graduate programs. Overall, we have seen approximately a 29% growth of student enrollment from Fall 20 through Fall 21. We are very proud of this achievement as most universities have seen decreases in enrollment because of the COVID crisis.
  • Through a generous donation, our Malek School of Nursing Professions partnered with Sibley Memorial Hospital to develop The Abbruzzese Scholarship Program. This program provides financial support for academically high achieving but financially needy students in the undergraduate bachelor's in nursing program. Recipients participate in nursing and associated learning activities, complete an internship during their final semester and move into a nurse residency program at Sibley Memorial Hospital, Washington, D.C. The aim of this collaboration is expansion and retention of new nurses in the workforce by reducing financial barriers and enhancing emotional and cultural support.
  • We have developed exciting new online programs in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, and have received approval for the development of Speech Language Pathology Masters program (coming 2026!). In addition, we are launching our newly developed Palliative Care and Health and Wellness Coaching graduate certificates. Some of these programs are in conjunction with our online partners Keypath Education.
  • Our faculty and staff have traveled throughout the world to present and attend conferences, provide needed services and community engagement. Some areas include Uganda, Colombia, Guatemala, Italy, and rural Tennessee.
  • Our faculty have been very productive in scholarship, having been awarded government and private foundation grants and contracts and have published and presented widely throughout the world.
  • The faculty in our School of Education received approval to develop an early childhood education center on our main campus for children aged 3-5 years. The center will support both the community and our students' learning and experiential needs and aims to open in 2023.

So, on behalf of CHE students, faculty and staff, we thank you for your interest and support. I am honored and humbled to continue to lead the excellent CHE faculty and staff and look forward to hearing from you.

Brianna Tines '22 graduated from Marymount this May with a master’s in Public Health Education and Promotion. She received her bachelor’s in Health and Exercise Science from Bridgewater College in 2017.
