Welcome to the January 2023 edition of the Alumni & Friends E-Newsletter. This month, we are highlighting an alumna who also works in Marymount’s Office of Wellness, and a psychology professor whose research examines parenting and children’s development among immigrant families.

Halo Awards Auction

We are excited to announce our first-ever Halo Awards Auction, opening online on February 13, 2023 at 9:00 a.m. and closing on February 24, 2023 at 3:00 p.m. The auction will take place in conjunction with the annual Halo Awards Dinner on February 23rd, and will feature items such as art appraisals, Kennedy Center tickets, and a catered dinner for you and your friends. Proceeds will go toward the Halo Endowed Scholarship fund, supporting students and their academic success.

Event Auctioneer, Colleene Fesko, will auction a few exclusive items at the Halo Awards Dinner on Thursday, February 23, 2023. Brianna Simmons '20 received her bachelor’s in Psychology from Marymount, and her master’s in Higher Education from The George Washington University. She is a current staff member at Marymount, working as the Case Manager in the Office of Wellness and Chair of the CARE Team.

While a student at Marymount, Brianna was involved in the Honors program and peer mentor program, as well as Phi Eta Sigma, Phi Kappa Phi and Psi Chi National Honor Societies. She was also a part of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated on campus, and served as the undergraduate student commencement speaker for the Class of 2020.

As a psychology major, Brianna’s passion for mental health grew at Marymount and inspired her moving toward her future career. As the Case Manager in the Office of Wellness and Chair of the CARE Team, Brianna works to help students going through challenging times, and hopes to grow the program as an important resource that students can utilize.

As for her future career goals, Brianna would like to stay in higher education, and hopes to one day become a Dean of Students. In her free time, Brianna loves shopping, going to the movies and any activities involving competition.

Dr. Linda Cote-Reilly is a psychology professor at Marymount. She received her bachelor’s at the Catholic University of America, and her master’s and doctorate at Clark University, which was the home of G. Stanley Hall, founder of child psychology and the American Psychological Association. She also completed postdoctoral work at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.

Dr. Cote-Reilly is a developmental psychologist and Certified Family Life Educator, and she joined the faculty at Marymount in 2007. Her interest in psychology, especially developmental psychology, came from having six siblings and growing up in a large family.

At Marymount, Dr. Cote-Reilly has taught courses on topics such as human growth and development, early childhood development, statistics for the social sciences, and research methods courses such as tests and measurements. Her research examines parenting and children’s development among immigrant families in the U.S., as well as topics such as language development, parenting and mother-infant interaction.

In her free time, Dr. Cote-Reilly enjoys playing pickleball with her husband and three sons.
